Are bladder leaks running your life?

Most women never call it “incontinence.” They just quietly work around it, one habit at a time. Tap any that sound familiar.

If you checked even one, you're not alone, and you don't have to just live with it. The most common cause is weak or poorly coordinated pelvic floor muscles, and muscles can be retrained.

What causes bladder leakage?

Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that works like a hammock at the bottom of your pelvis. It supports your bladder and other pelvic organs, and it tightens around the urethra every time you cough, lift or laugh. When those muscles weaken or stop working together, pressure or a sudden bladder squeeze pushes urine out.

The pelvic floor can weaken because of

  • Pregnancy and childbirth, especially vaginal delivery
  • Menopause and changing hormone levels
  • Natural muscle loss with age
  • Years of high-impact exercise or heavy lifting
  • Chronic cough, constipation or straining
  • Extra weight pressing on the bladder
  • Previous pelvic surgery, such as a hysterectomy

The three types of bladder leakage

Stress incontinence

“I can't hold it when I move.”

Pressure on the bladder causes leaks, from a cough, sneeze, laugh, jump or lifting something heavy.

Urge incontinence

“I have to go right now.”

The bladder muscle squeezes before it should, so you feel a sudden, intense urge and may leak before you reach the bathroom. Running water, coffee, alcohol or cold weather can set it off. When this happens often, day and night, it's also called overactive bladder.

Mixed incontinence

Both at once.

It's common after childbirth and in midlife.

How the Gazelle™ pelvic chair works

The Gazelle™ uses ExMI (Extracorporeal Magnetic Innervation). “Extracorporeal” means from outside the body, and “innervation” means activating the nerves that control a muscle. A coil in the seat sends pulsed magnetic energy through your clothing, up to 4 inches into the pelvic floor. It reaches the nerves that control those muscles and triggers deep, involuntary contractions.

These are supramaximal contractions, stronger than you could produce yourself with a Kegel. That repeated contract-and-release strengthens the muscles and retrains the brain-to-muscle signals behind bladder control. This process is called neuromuscular re-education.

What makes Gazelle™ different

The original technology

ExMI was the first chair-based magnetic pelvic floor technology to receive FDA 510(k) clearance, in 1998 (K973096). Gazelle™ is built on that original platform.

Tailored to you

Your provider can use preset protocols for stress, urge or mixed leakage, or adjust frequency and intensity to your comfort and goals.

Built for a steady, focused field

The chair's engineered coil assembly and built-in cooling help keep stimulation consistent from the first minute to the last.

Five frequencies, full depth

Gazelle™ treats at 2, 10, 23, 34 and 50 Hz. Lower frequencies reach deeper muscle layers, and higher frequencies work closer to the surface. Each session pairs two frequencies, so both deep and superficial pelvic floor muscles get worked.

Illustrative only: lower frequencies reach deeper layers, higher ones stay closer to the surface.

Backed by more than 25 years of research

Magnetic pelvic floor stimulation has been studied since the mid-1990s. Like any treatment, results vary from person to person. Your provider can walk you through what the research shows for your situation.

  1. 1999 Galloway et al., Urology. An early clinical study of seated magnetic therapy in women with stress incontinence.
  2. 2000 Fujishiro et al., Urology. A placebo-controlled trial of magnetic stimulation for stress incontinence.
  3. 2020 Weber-Rajek et al., BioMed Research International. A randomized trial comparing pelvic floor muscle training with ExMI for stress incontinence.

Is the Gazelle™ chair right for you?

Gazelle™ may be a good option if you're a woman who:

  • Leaks with coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting or exercise
  • Has sudden urges, goes to the bathroom often or wakes up at night to urinate
  • Noticed bladder changes after pregnancy or during menopause
  • Wants to avoid surgery or daily medication

  • Have an active pelvic cancer

We'll review your health history before your first session. Tell us about any implant or device, even if you're unsure what it's made of.

What our patients say

I have a new lease on life now that I’m not worried about wearing adult diapers to the gym. I thought I was doomed to a life sentence of incontinence but now I feel free to live like I did years ago.
Adam R.
I had increasing trouble with incontinence, even when walking. Carrying even light weights would cause a flow. After just two treatments, I noticed significant improvement. Over the course of treatment, the vast improvement was a great encouragement.
Emily T.
No more leaking while walking. If I have emptied my bladder recently, I can even carry weight without leaking.
Betty W.

What is the Gazelle™ pelvic chair?

A non-invasive pelvic floor chair built on ExMI, an FDA-cleared electromagnetic pelvic floor stimulation technology (510(k) K973096) indicated for treating urinary incontinence. You sit fully clothed while magnetic pulses strengthen and retrain your pelvic floor muscles.

What does it cost?

Pricing depends on the treatment plan that fits your needs. We'll give you exact pricing at your consultation and walk you through your payment options, with no obligation.

What does it feel like?

Most women feel tingling and a strong, rhythmic tightening of the pelvic floor. Some can even see their lower belly contract. It feels unusual at first, but it shouldn't hurt, and we can adjust the intensity at any time.

Do I need to undress?

No. You stay fully clothed the whole time. The magnetic field passes through clothing.

How many treatments will I need?

The standard plan is 3 sessions a week for 8 weeks, 24 sessions in all. Many patients feel stronger around the halfway point. The second half helps lock in the new muscle strength and control.

Does insurance cover it?
